Can drones be carried in hand baggage?
Based on the recommendations of the Hungarian authorities, Budapest Airport currently applies the following practice with regard to the transportation of drones, i.e. unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), in hand baggage:
The rotor blades of drones can be classified under “objects with a sharp point or sharp edge”, pursuant to section c) of attachment 4-C of Commission implementing regulation (EU) 2015/1998 laying down detailed measures for the implementation of the common basic standards on aviation security. Therefore, if the length of the rotor blades exceeds 6 cm, they cannot be carried in hand baggage.
Also, in view of the maximum speed and mass of drones during operation (which significantly increase the risk of causing serious injury in case of potential impact), the operation of UAVs in public (arrivals and departure halls) and in non-public (transit area, taxiways, aprons) areas would pose a significant risk to the physical integrity of passengers and their escorts, as well as to aircraft. Therefore, we wish to prevent the operation of UAVs in these areas. This is another reason why they may not be carried in hand baggage.
We would like to emphasize that passengers have the possibility of transporting drones in their hold baggage.
The security of our passengers is our top priority. We are committed to do our utmost to maintain this.
